Streaming quality?

Using the Apple TV (3rd Gen) I know that the streaming quality is meant to be 720p...is there any way to check that it actually is that quality?

 

Watching GoT, the dark scenes were terrible quality, blocky and smeary.  

 

Will the stream ever be upgraded to 1080?

720p should look very clear so if you're getting large chunks of pixels then it might have decreased for a split second. For dark scenes, it might be a good idea to make sure that your display hasn't got a picture setting which could be affecting this.
