While we look forward to some amazing cinema releases in 2014, let’s look at some cult classics which have stood the test of time and will be celebrating a milestone anniversary this year.

Turning 10: Mean Girls
Mean Girls has been in our lives for 10 years, and although “fetch” still hasn’t happened, this movie remains a cult favourite. Mind you, how can you go wrong with a screenplay by Tina Fey and supporting roles from both herself and Amy Poehler?! It’s interesting to note that Lindsay Lohan specifically asked not to be cast as Regina because she was concerned that the public might be inclined to liken her to the “mean girl” character…I know, right?!

Other movies turning 10 this year:

Team America: World Police, Napoleon Dynamite, The Notebook, The Day After Tomorrow, Saw

Turning 20: The Mask
It was 20 years ago that the man in the yellow suit, green mask and big teeth came bursting into cinemas. Sssssmokin’! This movie wasn’t just a launching pad for Jim Carrey’s career - coincidentally, The Mask also marks the big-screen debut of none other than model-turned-actress Cameron Diaz who won the role after no less than 12 auditions. Yes, 12. See, perseverance pays!

Speed, Four Weddings And A Funeral, The Santa Clause, Legends Of The Fall, Miracle On 34th Street

Turning 30: The Karate Kid
All the 80s kids who were inspired to take up karate lessons and try to catch flies with chopsticks will be feeling pretty old about now – Mr Miyagi first taught Daniel-san how to train for karate with everyday household chores 30 years ago this year. Yes, 30. Wax on, wax off.

Ghostbusters, Gremlins, The NeverEnding Story, Purple RainThe Muppets Take Manhattan

Turning 40: Young Frankenstein
Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder fans will be very familiar with Young Frankenstein – this horror spoof is often touted as their masterpiece. In fact, Gene Wilder has said that out of all the movies he’s made, this one is his favourite. Not only was it the most popular comedy of 1974, it even inspired Aerosmith to write “Walk This Way” after Marty Feldman’s famous line. If you’re a fan of classic comedy, this one is definitely worth a watch – and look out for Gene Hackman’s cameo!

Turning 50: Mary Poppins
The Banks family may have lived next door to the noisy neighbour from hell, but they had one hell of a nanny! This year marks the 50th year Mary Poppins has delighted audiences young and old, and the 50th year we’ve all enjoyed using the word  supercalifragilisticexpialidocious – even though the sound of it is really quite atrocious. This has to be one of the greatest movies in history - even Walt Disney considered it to be the best movie he ever made. And, considering it’s still a firm family favourite after all these years, we’re inclined to believe him!
