No internet when connected to router but can access the internet when connected to the extender

I've had to buy a wifi extender so it could reach the office. But if I connect my laptop in the same room as the router it won't connect to the Internet but if I use the extender I can access it. I don't understand can anyone help? It's so frustrating. This is even when there's only one device in the house to connect to the internet.

What kind of extender are you using, a model number might help.

If the extender is connected via the ethernet ports (perhaps with powerline) then maybe the Wi-Fi on the router is not functioning. 

Is the extender using the same SSID as the router, or are they different?
