My broadband went offline for about 2 hours a couple of days ago and it was faster when it came back

Previously, my router would connect at a line rate of approx 30,000 Kbps and I would be able to get sustained data transfers of approx 2.5 to 2.8 MBytes/sec.

Now, my router connects at approx 50,000 Kbps (currently showing 49,383) and I can get sustained data transfers of 4.5 to 4.9 MBytes/sec

Now, obviously, I'm not complaining, I'm just curious, did NowTV engineers (or Openreach maybe?) do some upgrades? To get a faster line rate I presume the improvement has taken place between my home a the FTTC cabinet? Maybe upgraded hardware at the cabinet? Maybe the flood waters over the last few weeks washed the copper clean 😉

Can anyone from Now actually answer this question for me? Is there any way to speak to them directly to ask?

You can look your gift horse in the mouth on any of these numbers:-

150 from a Now landline, or take your pick of:-

0800 759 1213, 0330 041 2518, 0330 041 2462, 0330 332 3050, 0330 041 2473, 0333 759 4816

😛

But they may have no more idea than you about the arcane background workings of Openreach; and Now engineers do not work on the public side of the broadband network.

Set a Payment PIN on your account so that no-one but you can buy memberships on it.
Check your bank accounts monthly for any other unexpected payments to Now.
That way you can at least nip them in the bud, while you and Now figure out whose fault they are.

@RoyB
Thanks Roy, I will have a think about whether it's even worth giving them a call. I don't want them to turn it back down again!

Might have been some work in the area to improve things / new cable/joints etc.

 If your happy with it then leave it as is, if you are curious then you could try and set up a broadband quality monitor such as the one here : https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality
