And those of us who are chugging along perfectly happy with our Now subscriptions (because if we weren’t, we’d be gone) are likewise bemused, in the absence of any substantive detail.

In fact, we don’t even know which subscription you are talking about 😢

Set a Payment PIN on your account so that no-one but you can buy memberships on it.
Check your bank accounts monthly for any other unexpected payments to Now.
That way you can at least nip them in the bud, while you and Now figure out whose fault they are.

Why?

As an ex Sky stream subscriber I find Now far superior via my Apple 4K. It’s never failed the picture quality is outstanding with Boost and the upscale via Apple, plus the subscription is so easy to navigate and offers are constant I’ve never paid full price. 
I’m no fan of Sky but the offer a great service via Now.
