Solution to menu highlighting problem?

It appears that the update has caused a change in the contrast settings of xbox. Go to settings, Ease of Access and disable high contrast if enabled. After doing this I could see the menu in NOW TV.

This is starting to make sense. The old Xbox one app used to use the Xbox system keyboard, which of course was fully compliant with the high contrast settings on Xbox one. The new app uses it own keyboard, which might as of yet not be compatible with high contrast mode. Possibly because the NowTV interface itself is fairly high contrast. Pretty much the whole NowTV interface is dark background with white text. So it's possible high contrast mode interferes with NowTV interface for the time being
