Landline Phone Voltage

I've recently bought a panasonic home phone but the caller ID only works randomly. Panasonic told me to check that the phone line (from NOW TV) is getting at least 5.1 volts. How do I find that out?

Have you got, or can you borrow, a multimeter?

Set a Payment PIN on your account so that no-one but you can buy memberships on it. Check your bank accounts monthly for any other unexpected payments to Now. That way you can at least nip them in the bud, while you and Now figure out whose fault they are.

Do you have it connected at the main/master socket? Have you tried connecting at the test socket behind the faceplate?

The phone line should be 50 volts. I very much doubt it will be lower.

Edit: as @RoyB says, the only way to find out will be to measure it.

If you have only just bought the Panasonic, did the caller ID work on the previous one, or did it not have the function?

Interestingly (well I found it interesting), we were discussing the line voltage and caller display on the Vodafone forum recently. It actually started out about digital voice and the adapter needed, but quickly went off topic.
