Estimated/Guaranteed speed a lot lower than offered!

just taken out a contract today with Now, having used at my previous property with no issues and super fibre speeds of around 68mb/sec. Went ahead with a new contract at new property, and the expected speed is around 25mb/sec with a guarantee of a measly 20mb/sec?!

now I know this property averages 50-60mb/sec anyway, so I've no idea why they only guarantee these shocking, almost ADSL speeds... should i cancel & go with plusnet instead?

@stevemac

Over ethernet or Wifi?

If its the latter then try splitting the bands.

The router provided by NOW isn't the best, so I would suggest trying your own.

Also bear in mind.

I've not actually had it installed yet, install dates another 2 weeks- just when i look in my orders it states the above estimated speeds. I dont want to sign up to them if these are to be the speeds ill get

The speeds you will get are totally dependant on the length and quality of the copper wires between you and your local cabinet, so on FTTC you will get exactly the same connection speed on every ISP. (allowing for slight differences in the modem supplied)

You can  see just what Openreach believe your line capable of here:

BT Broadband (btwholesale.com) if the phone number checker doesn't work, use the address one instead.

The only caveat with Now is is the hub supplied is somewhat sub-par on the Wi-Fi side, but its modem is fine.

The above seems perfectly acceptable, and similar to what the property was getting on BT anyway. I just find it odd that on the order page of my now account, they only speed guaranteed it at 20mb/sec and not close to the 63mb/sec that ill be paying for. Guess ill have to wait 10 days after installation & see if any improvement, and if not then I'll go elsewhere.

It is very odd they are giving such a low estimate/guarantee. As far as I know, they basically get their figures the same as the BT checker.

Assuming you are going to be on VDSL, not ADSL then you should get the same line speed as with BT.

I do think you may be disappointed by the Wi-Fi though, do let us know how it goes.

Remembering to stand very close to the router when posting to let us know 😛

Set a Payment PIN on your account so that no-one but you can buy memberships on it. Check your bank accounts monthly for any other unexpected payments to Now. That way you can at least nip them in the bud, while you and Now figure out whose fault they are.

as i said, ive actually not had any major issues with wifi with NOW in my previous property, apart from odd drops where I've rebooted router on occasion but I was happy enough with the service to go for NOW in my new property. But I know the seller of the property and have used his BT wifi previously and achieved 50-60mb/sec.

Virtually all of the info regarding slow speeds (where's your hub positioned? Etc.) are to do with the assumption they're making that I'm using their Wifi.

My house is wired throughout with Cat 6 Ethernet cable, and since its installation I'm only getting 47mbps when normally delivered according to them on my super fibre is 74, and minimum 54.

It's a shambles, you can't get through to them on chat or phone for ages, Ofcom beckons..

What number have you been trying to call the broadband team? Is it the number in the below link?
