Engineer has turned up even though it's self set up?

Basically the title. My broadband goes live today and it's self set up but an engineer I'd now in and setting it up adamant he's supposed to be here.

Attempted to contact NOW but I can't get ahold of a human and I'm not paying a set up fee when it's something I can do in 10 mins and self set up was selected.

Anyone else have this happen to them and were you secretly charged for something you didn't want or ask for?

Absolutely no charge for the engineer, sometimes openreach sends one out, sometimes not,

Hi @Anonymous User

There will be no setup fee involved from my experience.

The self setup is your side of the BT Master Socket, i.e. the router.

And  I’m guessing the Openreach engineer isn’t setting your router up for you?

His job will be ensuring that you do have a good clean signal at the Master Socket; to ‘never interrupt a man when he’s vacuuming’, add ‘never interrupt a man when he’s bringing you broadband’.

Set a Payment PIN on your account so that no-one but you can buy memberships on it.
Check your bank accounts monthly for any other unexpected payments to Now.
That way you can at least nip them in the bud, while you and Now figure out whose fault they are.
