Broadband speed

Just to make you all aware of advertised broadband speeds and how they are not accurate - and what you need to do to find the actual speeds and ensure you are not overpaying for a service that is impossible for nowtv (or any other broadband supplier) to achieve.

Openreach have a table of addresses with achievable broadband speeds, but this data is rarely accurate. This data is passed to suppliers like nowtv who will tell you what speed you could achieve, their guaranteed rate is usually set to 20% less than this value.

By using the maintenance page in your diagnostics tab when logged in to your router (192.168.0.1) you can see the actual broadband connection speed via the statistics popup.

If this connection speed is less than your guaranteed speed from nowtv you can lodge a complaint, they will either send out an Openreach engineer or try and persuade you to stay and offer the usual advice (changing wifi channel etc). The thing is the Openreach engineer if sent will run some speed tests, then magically a day later your guaranteed speed will nearly always magically drop to reflect the engineers results. At this time you are probably paying for a service that you are not able to receive (or ever have). So at this time you have three choices; terminate contract, request they lower the price (and speed - which you cant obtain  anyway) or stick and continue to be taken for a ride.

So the moral of the story is, as soon as you have a new provider of broadband check the actual broadband link speed via statistics on your router. Check this number to ensure you can achieve what it is they have lead you to believe is possible. Then negotiate or leave. Best case is openreach attend your premises and update their findings providing more accurate data to the broadband providers.

I wonder how many people are paying for a service that is impossible to achieve?
