My NOW TV page displays ' this app needs updating: please update this app from your device's app store.
I have tried doing this with my mobile bit with no luck any suggestions?

Have you tried unplugging the power and then restarting the television again to see if that kicks start the NOW App into life.
I had something similar on my Amazon Fire Stick NOW App and a power reboot seemed to fix this for me.
It worked thanks so much it was driving me nuts!
I don’t get where the mobile came into it?
Unless you were using it as a hotspot?
And if so, why?
(Others may be similarly confused, lighting on this thread in the future, as to how you fixed things)
