£1 charge for free trial

Why is it that NowTV is the only service in my entire life that has decided to have £1 credit checks on free trial? Is it really necessary? Seems like hassel and confusion for benefit that other service providers have deemed not worth.

Now haven’t taken the £1, only put a hold on it. The hold will be removed in a few days. This is just to check that the credit card details you supplied are qenuine in case you want to continue after the free trial.

 

Despite what you believe, putting a hold on a nominal amount, anything from 1p to £1 is quite common.
