Auto Renew - A Warning

Hello All,

Just in case someone else gets caught like this.

Some time ago I entered my Visa card number, went for a trial and used a supplied voucher code but cancelled voucher for when it expired so I wouldn't get auto renewal via my card.

Recently I purchased a voucher code and thought this is the way to go, purchase a code as and when I wanted it.

However after using the new voucher code, instead of it expiring and just stopping until another code is used, the auto renew kicked in again and charged my card.

It seems that because the auto-renew default kicked in it found my existing card details, which unfortunately was still valid. No idea why this defaults to doing this, well maybe I do!

There does not seem an easy way to clear your card details and/or stop the auto-renew without actually contacting someone. Maybe someone can clarify this or suggest an improvement to the options available?

Anyway, I would suggest that anyone wanting to go down the entering of voucher codes route, should make certain they cannot renew by using your existing card details, by contacting someone, (e.g. live chat), to remove card details/auto-renew. Of course it is fine if you want to subscribe and regularly have the amount charged to your card.

In affect I have now paid twice for my monthly subscription; purchased a code & charged from my card. At least I should be able to use the voucher code next month.

Hope this helps some people.

Hi @Anonymous User

So there is nothing showing under Passes & Vouchers ?

I doubt this question would be relevant, but have you more than one nowtv account and applied the voucher on a different account ?

This one is a long shot, where somebody was trying to watch a nowtv pass that was active on their account where it kept asking to buy a pass and the other person resolved it by disconnecting the power to the nowtv box and switching the power off to their router for about 30 secs.

Sorry i can't offer any more help, perhaps try live chat again where they can look into your account in more detail on their computer system.

Hi @Anonymous User

So you have a second nowtv account where it says your cinema pass is active until October the 29th and was that by checking under Passes & Vouchers on here.

I know this will sound like a silly question, but have you signed into your nowtv box and stick with the second account details ?

Or was that the reason you tried live chat that the cinema pass shows active when opening the NowTV App on your box / stick and under the My Account section of the NowTV App it shows the cinema pass is active to watch, where when trying to play a movie it comes up with a buy a cinema pass message ?

Apologies about my questions asked where i am trying to paint a picture in my mind whats happening.

Anyway sounds the only way you will get this resolved is speaking to live chat again.

There is something very disturbing about this company. Somebody mentioned the PPI scandal and I can well see this crowd suffering the same fate at some point since there is surely a killing for an injury lawyer company to make major hay with these on a class action basis. The internet is alive about this company doing this. Last year...having cancelled after paying for three months, they went on to take 10 £33 payments from my account without me knowing about it-most of which wasn't even in the flippin' football season. They could even see I had not used them. What would I have done as a business person? I'd have refunded. Obviously I would have refunded. But these? No chance. What's more, when I told the bloke on the phone, he said he would absolutely definitely cancel my renewal. Hey... Guess what? I had then to get security from my bank to interfere. What a palava. So, think very carefully before you give you bank details to NOW on auto renewal. Mark my words. You will, unless it's what you want, end up regretting it...

Two pieces of advice to avoid this...

  1. Use a Monzo/Revolut/Starling card for all online payments and keep account balance low and notifications on
  2. Use vouchers

Vouchers are good anyway, because they are cheaper, but your problems don’t start until you want to discontinue the service, either temporarily or permanently.

But while cancelling is inordinately difficult, something that certainly needs to be looked at, and while NowTV really ought to send out reminder emails about account inactivity, after about three months say, something that would also help with duplicate accounts, I have yet to see an issue where a proper cancel has failed to stop the payments going out to NowTV.

Set a Payment PIN on your account so that no-one but you can buy memberships on it. Check your bank accounts monthly for any other unexpected payments to Now. That way you can at least nip them in the bud, while you and Now figure out whose fault they are.

It still goes on

I have also been scammed by this

The warnings re recurrent payments are not sufficiently clear

Maybe legally and technically it is OK. -   probably even legal NOW TV.

this is however nothing more than obtaining moony by stealth and shows a total lack of consumer care.
