Sounds to me that the smart box is having a handshake HDMI issue with one of your HDMI components somewhere in the chain.

 

Noticed your Toshiba TV is HD Ready and i am assuming you have set the smart box to 720P in the box menu settings.

 

If you are getting nowhere, you may have to either replace the smart box (hopefully under warranty) should a replacement box also fails with the same symptoms then you may have to revert back to the standard black nowtv box which you mentioned worked fine in your setup.

I have it set to 720p, yes. Although twice the box has informed me it has detected a change in screen and automatically changed to 1080p, which my TV does display although obviously it is rescaling.
