I connected my old but unused white NOW TV box to my Panasonic Viera TV and internet router, and signed up for a free 14 Day trial of an Entertainment pass. Then I accessed "Sharp Objects" (the Amy Adams box-set) and sat back to enjoy episode 1. Unfortunately, I couldn't follow the dialogue (combination of delivery / accent), so I pressed "*" for subtitles. They came up, neat yellow text at bottom of screen, but were so out of sync with the pictures and were so intermittant as to be worse than useless. Then I remembered my TV has an HDMI input socket marked "ARC" (Audio Return Channel, for digital audio tramsmission). So, I swapped the HDMI cable for a better quality one which I knew was "ARC Compatible" (1.4 spec or higher) and plugged the NOW TV box into the ARC HDMI socket on the TV. Bingo! A result! The subtitles now working just fine. Don't know why, but it worked - for me anyway!
