Regarding a refund, best to try talking to live chat, explaining the situation and seeing if they can do anything for you. Make sure your mother in law is there with you as they need to speak to the account holder, although you can do the typing for her. To get there go to the following help page

After you've spoken to live chat don't forget to pop onto your My Account > My Passes and double check all passes are cancelled. I would also recommend enabling your Payment PIN in your account,
