I have a purple screen with white lines and dashes, nothing else. I believe the box is faulty but it is a few years old. TV working fine, and everything else has been checked. Online chat has been flashing the waiting dots for over an hour now and this seems to be the only way to chat with anyone at NOW TV

Have you tried power down the NOW Box and perhaps try a different HDMI port on your TV and HDMI cable on it ?
Also have you got another TV in the home, just to temporary test the NOW Box on a second TV ?

If you already tried the above.
Then if you have an active NOW subscription and also have the NOW physical remote, perhaps try a full factory reset on the NOW box if you haven't tried it already by holding in a pin in the small reset hole on the back of the NOW black box for around 30 seconds whilst both the box and TV is powered on.
