The five best movie superheroes…

1 1 2,890

‘I need a heroooo! I’m holding out for a hero ‘til the end of the niiight…’

With our Superheroes collection now available, I decided to pick out my five favourite superhero characters. Whether it’s the awesomeness of their actions or some kick-ass quotes, it’s a pretty formidable list. Check it out…

This guy is not your typical superhero…

Deadpool is probably the funniest superhero of all time, mixing amazing one-liners with incredible skills and kills. Deadpool is played by the brilliant (and super handsome) Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative who has become a mercenary.

When he falls in love with a former escort named Vanessa, he has the world at his feet, until he discovers he has incurable cancer. When he is offered a potential cure, Wilson agrees, but he has to undergo horrific torture to get it. Left badly disfigured – “like an avocado had sex with an older, more disgusting avocado” – Wilson vows revenge on the mysterious Francis.

Left totally indestructible ‘and completely unf***able’, Deadpool’s tale of revenge is as hilarious as it is awesome.

Batman in the Dark Knight

For all his plus points, Batman is not funny. But he is amazing

Billionaire Bruce Wayne by day and the caped crusader by night, I’m sure you’re all familiar with the story of Batman. However, with all due respect to the other movies and actors who have tried to portray him, the best Batman is played by Christian Bale in the Dark Knight saga.

That’s right, sorry Keaton, Kilmer, Affleck and the rest, but Bale absolutely nails Batman, simply because he is so imperfect. In other words, he is dark. In all three movies, he comes up against villains who are totally different, from the brilliant Scarecrow to the menacing Joker to the totally mad Bane, Batman sees them all off in the end.

Batman is at his best in the second of the three movies, mostly because Heath Ledger’s Joker is so amazing and he has to be at his best to stop him. With his amazing gadgets, handy allies and that husky voice, this Batman is the best of the lot.

Iron Man in Avengers Assemble

Back to another superhero whose jokes are as lethal as his abilities.

Whoever decided to cast Robert Downey Jr. as Ironman deserves a medal. The guy is absolutely brilliant in all of his movies, with his best work reserved for the Avengers movies. Here’s a selection of his best quotes:

Captain America: “Take off the suit of armour and what are you?”
Iron Man: “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.”

“I have a plan. Attack!”

“Apparently I’m volatile, self-obsessed, and don’t play well with others.”

“Please be a secret door, please be a secret door, please be a secret door.”
(Opens secret door)

Thor in Avengers Assemble
Hemsworth & Smulders.jpg

To be honest with you, I mostly just like the way Thor talks.

Thor is an alien from the planet Asgard and is mostly battling with the mischievous Loki, who happens to be his brother. That said, when Thor is reminded of Loki’s crimes, he is quick to point out that he is merely his ‘half-brother’. Good save, Thor.

Played by the magnificent Chris Hemsworth, Thor combines muscle with mischief brilliantly. New to planet earth, he is often battled by human nature, with his best quote of all when he dismissively says “You humans are so petty. And tiny.”

What a man.

Rorschach in Watchmen
Jackie Earle Haley 02.jpg

To call this guy a hero is stretching it a bit. I mean, the guy is totally nuts and not very pleasant. But he has a mask which shapeshifts, which is kind of cool, and he does know right from wrong.

In fact, it is Rorschach’s moral absolutism which makes him such an interesting character. In his world, there are no shades of grey, with the shifting patterns on his mask reflective of his changing views and the way he sees only the black and white. In Rorschach’s world; there is no middle ground.

But who is he? Well, a retired member of the vigilante group ‘The Watchmen’, Rorschach is not a typical hero. Not shy of a few wisecracks himself, Rorschach is a very funny character, not that you’ll ever see him smiling! What he does do a lot is tell the truth, which annoys his fellow team members, but it’s what guides him towards justice.

And anger.
