Hi Schnapps

You know, the top John Carpenter films for me are as follows:

1) The Thing, brilliant horror film and brilliantly acted.

2) Assault on Precinct 13, Jon's first major feature filled with stylised, John Wayne type  action. 

3) Escape from New York with Kurt Russell and Lee Van Cleef, another western-type film.

4) They Live, for me had an unsatisfactory ending (as far as I can remember) but I still enjoyed it.

As for your other films, I really enjoyed those as well.

A small(ish) film with a naff title but surprisingly good, directed by Jon Favreau, is Cowboys and Aliens, something to watch if you've got nothing else scheduled.

                                   

As long as you don't expect too much it's worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Thanks for the suggestion about Cowboys & Aliens (already watched it on bluray with my Love Film Rental Discs Subscription).

Ever since watching Tron Legacy, i have a man crush on Olivia Wiide (watching Vinyl on Sky Atlantic was especially a treat for me with Olivia showing all her naughty bits (unless they used a body double)

Afraid to say that whilst I mentioned Assault on Precinct 13 I've never actually seen it. However I am a big fan of John Carpenter horror, having produced two of the most iconic horrors ever, Halloween (easily one of my top 5 favourite horrors) and The Thing.

And speaking of Carpenter's great music, I love the superb Halloween theme, as heard in the opening credits to the film,M guaranteed to get my heart pumping

and probably one of the best examples of his incidental music adding significantly to the building sense of fear and dread in a horror film, the famous 'walk home from school' steadicam sequence

@ukbobboy I forgot Carpenter directed Escape from New York, but I quite enjoyed that. Wasn't Donald Pleasance in that as well? (Halloween connection). The US president maybe? Bit vague it's that long since I watched.

Surprised by Cowboys and Aliens, wouldn't have thought that would be a recommendation of yours, just shows personal taste is a funny thing!

That's a good shout about Halloween (Michael Myers) and the young Jamie Lee Curtis which like you said was another Directed John Carpenter flim, with a spooky sound track that sticks in your mind.

Also, i just remembered another John Carpenter movie with Jamie Lee Curtis was starring in which was "The Fog".

I was ok to a degree watching horror movies up until Freddy Krueger appeared in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and ever since i have been put off with the horror genre (Freddy did a good job of disturbing me forever).

I haven't heard of the movie "Christine" directed by John Carpenter i must have missed that one in the eighties on the old VHS Video Rental (Will have to checkout when i can find some spare time).

With regards to Love Film never had any problems with dodgy discs and fair play they have been pretty good with the films on my wish list that they send out to me.

Perhaps i have been lucky which is a change for me .

I completely forgot about Christine (1983), especially as it is one of my favourite John Carpenter films.

                                  

I think the reason why I like it so much is because the underdog become the protagonist.

As for "Escape from New York", yes, Donald Pleasence was in it, he played the part of the kidnapped US president that "Snake Plissken", Kurt Russell's character, had to rescue.

And I would agree that after "Escape from New York (1983) and Christine (1983)" John Carpenter has never been able to hit able to hit those high points of previous films.

Sorry Andy, Big Trouble in Little China (1986) and They Live (1988) although good did not missed it for me and came across as more comedy than horror.

Got to cut my post short, I'm getting those "Authentication Errors" again.

I've just come across a John Carpenter film that I've never heard of, "In the Mouth of Madness (1994)", as anybody ever seen it?

                                       

I'll probably see if it's available on DVD.

Yeah, for me Halloween is the template that all other stalker-slasher horrors follow, it perfected the formula and is one of the few films that I really can watch over and over again and still enjoy (and do!) It’s the blank expressionless face (Carpenter used a spray-painted William Shatner mask so not sure what that says about the great Shatman) and the fact that he never talks that makes him so scary, and Carpenter’s soundtrack is spot on.

Forgot about The Fog, but you’re right that was a good film, I’ve only seen it once and a long time back so may have to revisit that.

As for Big Trouble in Little China that’s another film I forgot was John Carpenter.

And funny you should mention ‘They Live’ as I saw it for the first time a few months back on Shudder, and really enjoyed it - a fun B-movie vibe to it and very creative, reminded me of Robocop in the satirising of consumer society.

Hi UK Bob,

I also seem to have overlooked this movie " In the mouth of madness" (will have to see if it's available on one of the streaming services).

My opinion is that John Carpenter best work was in the late seventies up to the mid eighties (I found after this period the movies weren't has good compared to his older classics).

It's annoying that NowTV don't offer a search feature for Director or Actor/ Actress

All this talk about John Carpenter on here has made me want to revisit some of his older movies 

NowTV search was a right pain in the backside, where you had to input the name of each movie (That is if you knew the name of the movie you was after from the start) 

Netflix and Amazon Prime search function was a dream to use , just typed in "John C" and upped pop the movies on their streaming site 

NowTV take note.

You can if you use the website catalogue at https://watch.nowtv.com/movies/explorer (there's only Ghosts of Mars and The Thing on the service at the mo) but you're right it would be good for this to be available across devices.

I was going to say it's already been suggested in the Ideas section if you want to vote it, but having checked  I can see its your submission in the first place 😄

Thanks for the tip, wasn't aware there was a more advanced search feature on the website which is good to know.

I am more old school and much prefer to use the search function with a remote controller where the results appear on the TV screen.

It's a shame that the NowTV software developers can't implement this advanced search option into all nowtv supported devices (especially the nowtv boxes in my particular case).

Hi Gang

As I sit here (at home) with my wooden cans on, grooving on some old tunes, I reckon I'm gonna try and watch the following films within the next two or so weeks.

1) Okja - Andy says that the super pig (mutant hippo) film is quite good and, so as long as Andy does not recommend a Nick Cage movie, I believe him.   Oh yeah.

2) Death Note - I wanna watch the live action Netflix version, that clip that Casey posted looks interesting/good and seems to follow the original live action film quite well.

3) In the Mouth of Madness (1994) - It's a John Carpenter film, what more needs to be said, other than I've now got to hunt down the DVD.

4) Wonder Woman - Just gotta see it, nuff said.

The Defenders, Punisher, Jessica Jones 2

Just out of interest: Does anyone know if "Rick and Morty" will be back on TV, it's the only adult cartoon that was on TV that I actually liked. I'm not keen on Family Guy but I do like most episodes of American Dad.
