Andy Murray conquers Wimbledon

Andrew Barron Murray what took you so long? It’s been 77 years in the waiting and you decided to do what many British tennis players before you failed at, during one of the hottest summers experienced in the UK.  Murray seemed like he wasn’t going to make the final during a few matches in the tournament, but Wimbledon 2013 saw the nation on stand still when Murray made the men’s final against top seed Novak Djokovic. These two provided us nothing short of a classic Wimbledon final, which ended 6-4 7-5 6-4 after three hours and ten minutes. He now has a Wimbledon title and is the proud owner of an OBE, Mr Murray owned 2013.

18.5.13 End Of An Era

As a die-hard fan of Manchester United for 25years, it felt like a famous friend of mine stopped doing what he loved. On the 18th of May 2013 the whole world saw a grown man cry, and some of us had a heavy heart when we witnessed England’s prodigal son David Beckham officially retire after 17 years playing the beautiful game. A man who has graced the pitch for many top clubs in the world, is the first English man to win league championship trophies in four different countries. An era of Football also ended with Beckham’s announcement, of the throwback hardworking footballer. I recall just saying “thank you” to the TV screen when he appeared. What a career and what a guy Beckham is, this announcement sent Twitter into meltdown which was only fitting for the great man. The world of Football still pay their tributes to Becks and I’m hoping I get the call to play him in he’s biopic.

The Heat too hot for Spurs

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” This is a quote from the greatest basketball player of all time Michael Jordan, and this particular quote applies to Miami Heat and the NBA’s biggest star Lebron James. To be labelled great in the NBA you have to claim the biggest prize which is the all-important ring. The seven game final came down to San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat. Five games in, and the Spurs were leading three games to two and one game away from clinching the championship. The nail biting game six ended with a Miami Heat and the series at 3-3. I recall early hours of the morning waiting for the final game like a kid on Christmas Eve with the hype around the game was too intense not to witness live on TV. MVP Lebron James stepped to the plate to get his Miami Heat team across the finish line and win back to back championships - scoring 37 points and 12 rounds. James once again showed why he deserves a mention a few breathes after Michael Jordan.

Vettel owned F1

The 2013 F1 season reads like this: 22 drivers took part in the 19 race season, 22 drivers scrambled to win 6 races, and one man named Sebastian Vettel won 13 all by himself.  In the process of doing so he became the youngest driver to win quadruple F1 championships, this also included ‘most consecutive wins’, ‘wins in a season’ and ‘most championship points earned in a season’. All in all, a pretty boring year in F1 then!

Only Ray To Do It

This Super Bowl will be remembered for many things, New Orleans hosting the greatest show on earth for a tenth time and Beyoncé bringing the house down, literally, as the stadium experienced a blackout for 34 minutes after her performance. But when it’s all said and done it will be remembered as the last time the NFL would see one of the most colourful players in the history of the sport grace the field – Ray Lewis.  Ray led his beloved Baltimore Ravens out against San Francisco 49ers, which saw the game end 34-31. This was a fitting way to end the career for one of the best line backs ever, who was renowned for his faith in God and providing motivational and uplifting team talks. Mr. Lewis thanks for your contribution to America’s most loved sport.

Fergie’s Final Farewell

13 league titles, 5 FA cups and 2 Champions’ League trophies in 27 years of management, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to call it a day at the end of the 2012/2013 season. In a sentimental send-off speech after the last home game against Swansea, Ferguson thanked players, staff and fans whilst encouraging supporters to fully back new and current manager David Moyes. These moments rarely happen in football, so it was one full of emotion that both Man United fans and neutral supporters can agree on the emotional feel of it all. It’s safe to say it’ll be very hard to surpass the legacy of this legendary boss.
