It seems the android app is now not working on the new version of the operating system 6.0 marshmallow
It will cast to a chromecast, just not play directly on the device.
Hopefully it can be fixed with an update to the app. It doesn't really affect our viewing as we cast to a chromecast, but would be annoying if we were away and wanted to watch anything directly on the Nexus 9 tablet.
Maybe worth considering holding off on updating your Nexus device if you want to watch on that device.
