We love sport and if you’re reading this you probably love it too. Unfortunately some sports are loved more than others but we’re here to tell you, there’s more to this sporting life than football, Formula 1 and darts. Like the midnight zone in the ocean, all types of strange forms can be found if you just dive a little deeper. Why follow the crowd when you can open up to a whole new lexicon of athletic endeavour in the shape of ping pong, handball and everyone’s favourite second sport, cycling.

The Ping Pong World Champs are coming to London.

First up comes the World Championship of Ping Pong, which takes place at Alexandra Palace this weekend. Watch the masters of spin in a two-day tournament that brings 64 of the world’s best players together in what will be a spectacle of disguised serves, slice backhands and forehand smashes. Ping Pong players all use the same traditional sandpaper paddles (bats) without any of the flashy spongy ones much-loved of those ‘Fancy Dans’ of table tennis. With everyone equal in terms of equipment, it will come down to the pure skills of the player to decide whether they progress or not. So whether you’re a fan of the ‘penhold’ grip or the more conventional ‘handshake’ hold, tune in to watch from noon on Saturday.

Get ready for a flurry of movement and colour at the World Handball Championships.

For those of you who like to try new things, it doesn’t get any more obscure than the 24th Edition of the 2015 World Men’s Handball Championship. Currently underway in that hot bed of sporting fervour known as Qatar, handball is huge everywhere in the world apart from the United Kingdom. We are obviously missing a trick because this 7-a-side team game is fast, furious and super exciting. Just think football but played with the hands… can you see what they did there? Dive shots, penalty throws and lots of goals are the order of the day. This weekend sees the final games of the group stage take place with favourites France taking on unbeaten Sweden the standout game tomorrow

Team Sky will be looking to head up The Tour Down Under.

Last but no means least, for those of you who like to wear your Lycra even when you’re not on two-wheels, the six-day 2015 UCI WorldTour season opener is already underway in the sunny climes of Australia. The Santos Tour Down Under reaches its 5th stage tomorrow with Team Sky’s Richie Porte looking to make a charge for the line. The decisive Queen Stage ends with the 3.5km climb up Willunga Hill, where Porte claimed victory in last year’s race. It’s also an opportunity to spot any potential riders and teams to watch out for the year ahead.

So do yourself a favour and check out a big weekend of sport from far-flung corners of the Earth. It’s a whole new world…
