It is perhaps fitting that this weekend of sporting extravagance has been heralded by a solar eclipse. Whether the omens have been good or bad for the teams on show we will not know until late Sunday evening, but whoever comes out on top may well like to give thanks to divine inspiration.

Messi

   Ronaldo

Like when planets converge in a perfect trine, Sunday sees an array of shooting stars facing each other in undoubtedly the biggest club games in world football. Early afternoon, we see the twin dynasties of English football come together in an eagerly awaited clash of the titans.

A rejuvenated Manchester United will travel to Anfield to take on the division’s form team Liverpool, who remain unbeaten in all competitions this year. Whoever wins this game will take a giant step in the race for the top four while denting the hopes of their bitter rival.

Later that evening in a galaxy not too far away, there will be another constellation of stars gathered in a cosmic field known as the Camp Nou. Real Madrid’s ultimate galactico Cristiano Ronaldo may have been crowned the world’s best player but it is Barcelona’s Lionel Messi who is currently playing football from a different planet at the moment. With one point separating the two best teams in Spain at the top of La Liga, best prepare yourself for 90 minutes of pure theatre.

Jose Dick Advocaat

If that isn’t enough top class football for you then you can always watch Chelsea ongoing pursuit of Premier League glory when they visit the KC Stadium in Sunday’s late afternoon game. Jose’s boys may have wobbled recently on their trajectory towards their ultimate goal but will be looking to get back on track against Steve Bruce’s Tigers.

Let’s not forget Saturday and the resumption of the most competitive league in the world in the form of the Sky Bet Championship. The mad dash for the Premier League continues apace when surprise package AFC Bournemouth welcome high flying Middlesbrough to Dean Court.

Saturday Night Football is one not to miss. Dick Advocaat takes his place as the latest incumbent in the Sunderland hot seat. He’s sure to get a rude awakening down at Upton Park but will the experienced Dutch manager be able to handle the one they call Big Sam? We wait to see.

Just one more thing before we go. For those of you who prefer the oval ball to the round one, don’t forget you can also watch the conclusion of the Six Nations Rugby tournament using the BBC Sport app on the NOW TV box.

So there you have it. A spectacular weekend coming at you like a meteor sprinkled with star dust.
