Sleeping-With-The-Enemy.jpg

Movies of the late 80s/early 90s often played with the “If I can’t have you, no one will” type plot, in which a character possessed a compulsive-like behaviour towards their chosen subject (e.g. partner, favourite celebrity, roommate etc.). The formula was simple: if need be, they will do anything and everything to be with their want, even if it kills them…or anyone in the way.

Amongst the many in this group, Sleeping with the Enemy is a worthy mention. Post-Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts took a complete U-turn in her career, stepping away from the light hearted, romantic field into more darker and provocative pastures.

Roberts’ character, Laura, is married to Martin Burney – a control-freak, obsessive and abusive husband who meticulously controls any and every part of her life and day-to-day duties down to the detail: from the way the way towels are folded, to the positioning of foods cans. From an outsider’s perspective they appear as the loving and successful couple with a 4 years long marriage and fancy beach house. However, escaping is the dream for Laura, but not an option for someone in her situation and mind state. Having reached her peak, she finally figures out a way to break free - faking her own death, changing appearance and fleeing to a new city. But when Martin begins to doubt her death, investigating to find the truth, he goes on a hunt to find and kill her.

If you’re a fan of suspenseful thrillers with a gripping end to match, you’ve got to go with Sleeping with the Enemy this week!
