Philomena
This critically acclaimed drama starring Judy Dench and Steve Coogan was a big hit last year and rightfully so.  Based on the book The Lost Child of Philomena Lee by Martin Sixsmith, it’s the true story of Philomena and Martin’s search for the son she was forced to put up for adoption 50 years earlier. Martin was a journalist who, after suddenly becoming unemployed, decided to take up a “human interest story” after hearing about Philomena’s 50 year search. Starting with the convent in Ireland where she gave birth and ending up in the USA where Philomena’s son was raised, their search and this story has garnered as much controversy as critical acclaim as it deals with the sensitive topic of forced adoption in 1950s Ireland.

American Hustle
With no less than 10 nominations at this year’s Oscars and winning multiple Golden Globes and BAFTAs and a whole raft of other awards, American Hustle really was one of the biggest movies to come out last year. Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper had some serious make-overs for their roles, with Bale sporting a pot belly and amazing comb-over and Cooper with his hair in a tight perm – mind you, it is set in 1978. They’re joined by Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner in this comedy crime-drama about con artists, corrupt politicians and undercover FBI agents.

The Counselor
There have been plenty of movies about crooked cops, but not as many about crooked lawyers. When a successful lawyer takes part in a drug trafficking plan with a Mexican cartel, it looks like he’s about to make a substantial amount of money. Unfortunately he soon finds himself in well over his head when the deal goes sour. With lots of double-crosses and nail-biting moments, this tense thriller will have you on the edge of your seat all the way through. With a strong cast including Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and Javier Bardem, Ridley Scott’s The Counselor is well worth a watch.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit
Jack Ryan may be a well-known Tom Clancy hero, but this is the first of the series that isn’t based on one of his books. Having been played by Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck in the past, it’s Chris Pine’s turn to step up as the CIA analyst with a nose for danger. This time Jack’s in Russia looking into a powerful man with suspected terrorist connections. When his girlfriend (Kiera Knightley) turns up as well, things really start to get interesting in this action packed thriller directed by and co-starring, Kenneth Branagh.

Alien Tetralogy
Nothing has ever really been quite the same since Ridley Scott gave us Alien back in 1979. This series of truly remarkable horror sci-fi movies will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through as Ripley and her crew try to stay alive after they unwittingly pick up a lethal and terrifying alien. With sets and special effects from renowned artist, the late H.R. Giger, and consistently strong performances from Sigourney Weaver, it really is no surprise that both Alien and Aliens are listed in IMDb’s Top 250 Movies. We highly recommend watching them in sequence and then rounding it off with the 2012 prequel, Prometheus.

Ghostbusters & Ghostbusters II
When there’s something strange in your neighbourhood, who you gonna call? I know you just said “Ghost-busters” in your head. That’s because it really is one of the stand-out movies of the 80s. Dan Ackroyd, Bill Murray and the late Harold Ramis are the three scientists with a unique start-up business – ghost removal. Add Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis to the mix along with some truly memorable ghosts and you’ve got yourself a couple of cult movies that really have stood the test of time. Will their business ever be taken seriously? Can they save New York and ultimately the world? And will they remember not to cross the streams? Get the popcorn ready!

King Arthur
Clive Owen is Arthur in this epic telling of the real King Arthur legend. With a great supporting cast including Keira Knightley, Mads Mikkelsen and Joel Edgerton, this story concentrates on the political history of the time rather than tales of magic, making this interpretation a nice change from the usual King Arthur movies like Excalibur.

Pocahontas
Disney’s Pocahontas was a huge hit when it first came out and was the first Disney movie to have been inspired by a real story. When a group of English soldiers land on the shores of what would become The United States of America, it’s not long before one of them, John Smith, meets Pocahontas and they fall in love. Unfortunately neither the English soldiers nor the Native Americans trust each other and it’s up to Pocahontas and John to try and maintain peace between the two groups and try to encourage trust and understanding.
